NFCA A11 Best Practice Moisture Testing 2024

An Improved Approach To Moisture Testing

- Introduces the need for an improved approach to moisture testing for flooring installations on concrete substrates, as traditional methods are not always accurate predictors of moisture conditions.

- Defines important terms related to moisture in concrete like moisture content, relative humidity, vapor pressure differential, dew point, alkaline salts, curing vs drying.

- Discusses sources of moisture in concrete like mix water, ground moisture, vapor pressure differences. Explains how alkaline salts can artificially lower moisture readings.

- Describes indicative (informal) tests and controlled (formal) tests used to assess moisture conditions. Identifies limitations of traditional tests like ASTM F1869 and ASTM F2170.

- Recommends using ASTM F2659 in combination with F1869 and F2170 to better map moisture across large areas and identify problem zones requiring mitigation.

- Outlines responsibilities and testing requirements for project participants like the constructor, subcontractors, manufacturers.

- Provides guidance on concrete mix design, placement, finishing, curing, protection, and establishing drying conditions.

- Discusses temperature/humidity controls needed during construction and importance of the permanent HVAC system.

- Defines quality management program requirements and pre-construction coordination activities.

- Details specific moisture testing procedures, frequencies and acceptance criteria.

- Provides recommendations for removing excess moisture from concrete if needed.

- Includes appendices defining terms, contextual concrete info, managing drying conditions, and a sample specification.
